Kolkata, formerly known as Calcutta in English, The city was a colonial city developed by the British East India Company and then by the British Empire.
In the late 1800s, British exports to India accounted for over 20% of their total exports.
By the early 1900s, Britain was sending in excess of 150 Million Pounds worth of goods to India.
A British Engineer in the early 1900s that lived in Kolkata, commissioned local craftsman to make this for his wife, who was homesick. (So the story goes)
The wood (mature oak) was an export from Britain.
